No matter the time of year, there’s nothing quite like popping by a farmer’s market to see what’s in season. At The Vale you’re just steps away from the FRESHFARM Market, located here in the Parks at Walter Reed. Every Sunday from August to October, vendors set up shop with fresh local goods for you to stock up your spacious kitchen or grab something on the go. Of the 15 total vendors, here are a few of our favorites:
For the cheese connoisseur
Some of the best chefs and restaurants in the country serve cheese from Caputo Brothers Creamery to their patrons. The Pennsylvania creamery makes the only naturally fermented cheese curds in the country, and you can find their cheese every week at the FRESHFARM Market, steps away from The Vale.
For the spice enthusiast
Seek out chef Sabina Jules’ Motherland Kitchen for some of the best African-inspired dishes in D.C. They also offer a full range of hard-to-find African spices, blends and hot sauces to add to your kitchen lineup.
For those seeking a taste of fall
Capitol Cider House out of Petworth is joining the market twice a month with a selection of cider that will get you in the spirit of autumn. Not to mention they only use locally sourced ingredients. They’re all worth picking up, but keep an eye out for our favorites – the Capitol Rosé and Life’s A Peach – to fill your fridge.
For the coffee crowd
After yoga on the Great Lawn, stop by the market for a Sunday morning staple: Freshly brewed coffee from Fresh O The Roast, a small-batch roastery housed inside Qualia Coffee in Petworth. Don’t forget to buy a bag of beans to take home – all of their beans are carefully sourced from around the world and sold within three days of roasting.
For your four-legged friends
Yes, even pups can find something to enjoy at the market (other than the last piece of your scone). Snarfies makes handmade, natural pet treats with only one or two ingredients: Beef, chicken or egg. Your pup will appreciate it, and you’ll feel good knowing you’re giving them the best locally-made treats.
Bonus: Plenty of produce
Pick your produce – from late-season peaches to crisp apples, okra, mushrooms and whatever else is in season – from four different farms every Sunday at the FRESHFARM Market. These vendors also return every Tuesday at the FRESHFARM Produce Stand, so you can stock up for the rest of the week or take advantage of their Market Share subscription.
